Domestic Partners Registry in California
Same-sex couples may acquire some of the rights that would be granted to spouses in a heterosexual marriage through registration of their domestic partnership with the State of California and becoming Registered Domestic Parnters. In California, unmarried heterosexual couples who are over the age of 62 may also register their domestic partnership and become Registered Domesic Partners. Our law firm counsels non-registered and registered domestic partners on critical legal issues that can significantly affect their rights as individuals, as couples and as parents.
There remains significant differences in the laws that effect domestic partners when comparing California state law to federal laws and even amongst the growing number of States that allow for domestic partnerships for same-sex couples or seniors. Those states that allow same-sex couples to marry may or may not provide for domestic partnerships as an alternative for those couples. At the Law Offices of Yacoba Ann Feldman, we are familiar with the many unique issues that confront same-sex couples and others eligible to register as domestic partners. We provide effective estate planning services that coordinate the differences in California and federal law to ensure our clients can effect their estate planning goals while protecting their interests to provide for their loved ones. Our services include:
- Wills and trusts
- Advanced health care directives
- Utilizing life insurance as part of your estate plan
- Second-parent adoptions, joint ownership agreements, "pre-registration" and "post-registration" agreements
